Before we enter our topic, let us begin with What is a Minimalist. A minimalist is the one who advocates or practices minimalism, a practice influenced by the spare aesthetic of Japan’s traditional Zen Buddhism, which is the way of life in searching for freedom by living with less material possessions. This minimalist movement starts growing nowadays across the globe, despite of age, gender nor status. But why be a minimalist? Being a minimalist can assist you in finding more free time, finding more room for what's more important in your life, and also having more pleasure with less worry. Here are some acts a minimalist would do in order to achieve the principle of practicing minimalism in daily lives.
1. Meditation
Everything begins within our mind. People cannot change their habits without first changing their way of thinking. Eventually, having a peaceful mind means having less distractions on our mind to make us less worry. Meditation is perhaps known as the most crucial tool to harness the power of thought. This practical steps helps to quiet the mind and have deep concentration. When become proficient, a minimalist will be able to reach calm focused states of mind effortlessly, alleviating mental distractions with less thought in mind.
2. Tidying Up Wardrobe
Omit needless things. You have tonnes of clothes in your wardrobe and you are still unsatisfied and confused which shirt you are going to wear every day. Minimalist eliminates this distress by identifying the essentials, and asking themselves, which is the most important. Toss all those shirts they will not be wearing frequently. According to the eBook, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" written by Marie Kondo, when a clothes is no longer being used for six months, it means you are no longer needing it. Keep the clothes for its purposes, not for sentiments. A minimalist would buy a little pricier shirt with high durability and longer lasting, instead of a purchasing a bunch of clothes on sale, that you found worth buying for its price but seldom wore it.
3. Donation
What would you do when you have too many things you already owned but found useless to you? Yes, donation could be the answer. A minimalist would collect the unnecessary stuffs that is still usable from their home, and donate to the ones that really need them. for example, the orphans and the homeless. A minimalist could be happier as the home is filled less clutter and looks cleaner, and also by helping the needs. And for your information, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, it is estimated that there are 1.56 million people found homeless in this country. To a minimalist, there's nothing much happier than helping others out, and the solution is by donation.
4. Using Public Transport/ Carpooling
A minimalist not only care for him/herself, but the environment too. As a minimalist, it is important to know how much waste gas like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide is produced from vehicle exhaust, which causes harm to the human and ecosystem. By using public transport provided like buses, trains, or monorails, less waste gas is released to the air and therefore less harm to the environment. Besides, a minimalist would participate in carpool too! By creating a community around the residential area, it is easier to communicate and have carpooling to the same desired destination. In a shorter distance, a minimalist would prefer to ride a bicycle instead of using a car, as it is more environmental friendly, and it leads towards a much healthier life too!
5. Gardening
5. Gardening
Having a backyard full of weed? Why not transforming it into a beautiful flower or vegetable garden! By having a vegetable garden, a minimalist can cook what he/she planted without worrying how much pesticide and chemical fertilizers content inside, eventually helping ones to eat healthier. An Oregon State University Extension horticulturist, Ross Penhallegon once stated that, many vegetables can grow well in containers located on a patio, porch, balcony or windowsill," Therefore, for the one who doesn't own a backyard or not having much space for gardening, there is still a variety of crops can be planted, including lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, carrots, beans, squash, radishes, strawberries, chard and spinach, instead of growing large vegetables like corn.
In a nutshell, those are just some of the examples that a minimalist would do in daily basis, but there are a lot more interesting activities that can be done by a minimalist in searching for freedom, the freedom of worry and the freedom of desperation. Life is so short and it is very important to know that what is essential to your life, focus on the important things and you will sooner have less worry, and gradually become more productive in your work. Let’s start having this beneficial form of lifestyle together little by little, and you will find the pleasure and satisfaction of being a minimalist.
